An uneasy sensation felt in the upper part of the stomach, accompanied by an urge to vomit is often described as nausea. It is a common condition that could be caused by various reasons. Some of these reasons include:

medications and illnesses

pregnancy related nausea

gastroenteritis

food poisoning

motion sickness

indigestion

stress

Nausea is an uneasy feeling that can cause a great deal of discomfort. However, the good news is that it can be alleviated using some simple yet effective home remedies.

Natural Home Remedies for Nausea

There are several household kitchen staples and herbs that can help to curb the effects of nausea. Herbal mixtures, teas and natural juices all have the potential of alleviating nausea.

Remedies from the refrigerator

Heat 1 cup milk until it is hot but do not boil it. Pour into a bowl. Take a piece of slightly buttered toast and crumble it into the milk. Eat slowly.

Mix 1 teaspoon honey with 1 teaspoon lemon juice. Dip your finger into the mixture and lick it. This is to ensure that you take the prepared liquid gradually.

It is always advised to avoid solid foods when experiencing persistent nausea with vomiting. However, you still need fluids to maintain your body’s healthy balance. Cranberry juice is ideal for this period of fasting as it is full of antioxidants and vitamin C. It is also good for your digestive tract.

To stop nausea or vomiting with immediacy, mix 1 cup water, 10 drops lime juice and ½ teaspoon sugar. Add ¼ teaspoon baking soda and drink.

Herbal Remedies

Brew a cup of clove tea using 1 teaspoon clove powder in a teacup with boiling water. Strain the residual cloves and drink as required.

Steep ½ teaspoon cinnamon powder in 1 cup boiling water, strain and sip. Do not use this remedy if pregnant.

Steep a cup of tea with 1 teaspoon cumin seeds and a pinch of nutmeg to soothe an upset stomach.

Crush 1 tablespoon fennel seeds and steep for 10 minutes in 1 cup boiling water. Sweeten to taste with honey and sip as required.

Brew aniseed into a cup of tea by putting ¼ teaspoon in ½ cup boiling water. Steep for 5 minutes. Strain and drink once daily. Alternatively, sprinkle aniseed on mild vegetables like carrot or pumpkin. If you can manage to eat fruits, try aniseed on baked apples or pears.

Ginger and ginger root are perhaps the best cures for nausea and vomiting. Ginger consumed in any form, will relieve nausea. Try taking ginger tea, gingerbread or gingersnaps. Ginger ales can also be used if they contain real ginger content. Much of the ginger ales in the market today are absent of curative ginger.

Mint tea is as effective as ginger. Steep about 1 tablespoon dry leaves in 1 pint hot water for 30 minutes. Strain and drink. Do not throw the remaining leaves out. Instead, eat them. Eating boiled mint leaves also helps to cure nausea.

Other Natural Home Remedies

Smelling vomit usually induces more vomiting or causes prolonged nausea. After vomiting, rinse the remaining particles from your mouth with ¼ cup vinegar in a 4-ounce glass. Ensure you only use the mixture to rinse your mouth. Do not gargle. This should also help to freshen your breath.

Nuasea can cause a great deal of discomfort and annoyance. The above mentioned tips will be useful to alleviate this problem and since they are made using easily available resources, you can easily try these home remedies at home.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), gastric reflux disease, or acid reflux disease is defined as chronic symptoms or mucosal damage produced by the abnormal reflux in the esophagus. It is a condition in which the liquid content of the stomach regurgitates into the esophagus causing inflammation and damage to the lining. . The regurgitated liquid usually contains acid and pepsin which are produced by the stomach may also contain bile that has backed-up into the stomach from the duodenum. The most-common symptoms of GERD are heartburn, regurgitation and difficulty swallowing. Heartburn is the primary symptom and it manifests as a burning sensation that travels up from the stomach to the chest and throat. Risk factors for heartburn are a heavy meal, bending over, lifting, and lying down, particularly on the back.
Any injury to the lining of the esophagus results in a chronic condition. Once GERD begins it will be life-long and is usually recurring even after treatment. Once treatment for GERD is begun, therefore, it usually will need to be continued indefinitely although it is argued that in some patients with intermittent symptoms and no esophagitis, treatment can be intermittent and done only during symptomatic periods.

Remedies for Acid Reflux

Home and Natural Remedies

Apple cider vinegar – studies reveal that apple cider vinegar can help to relieve the symptoms of occasional heartburn or acid reflux. There are several underlying theories as to how apple cider vinegar aids in acid reflux, but despite the variations all conclude that this natural home remedy really works. Take one tablespoon of Apple cider vinegar prior to each meal; this dose can be continued even after symptoms go away.

Baking soda – the sodium bicarbonate found in baking soda acts as an acid neutralizer in the stomach and regulates the flow of acid. Use half a teaspoon to a teaspoon of baking soda to 1-3 ounces of water. Ensure the mixture is completely dissolved before drinking.

Apple – the consumption of apples is one of the easiest and most natural remedies for acid reflex particularly when eaten before retiring to bed.

Ginger tea – visit your nearest health food store and purchase organic ginger tea or ginger root capsules. Take before or immediately following a meal.

Aloe Vera juice – the Aloe plant originates from Africa. The long, green leaves contain aloe gel and a sticky yellow residue called latex. The gel is the part of the aloe plant used most commonly, both topically and orally. Take 1/4 cup of aloe Vera juice approximately 20 minutes before a meal to help soothe an irritated esophagus.

Diet – eat smaller meals, avoid spicy, carbonated and caffeinated drinks and foods, and avoid acidic foods such as grapefruit and oranges.

Garlic – chew fresh garlic or juice in a drink convert the allicin (compound with antibacterial and antifungal properties) in the garlic to its active ingredient.

Heartburn or pyrosis is a painful or burning sensation in the esophagus, just below the breastbone caused by regurgitation of gastric acid. Heartburn is not as dangerous a disease as it sounds. The pain often rises in the chest and may radiate to the neck, throat, or angle of the jaw. Heartburn is also identified as one of the causes of chronic cough, and may even mimic asthma. Despite its name, heartburn actually has nothing to do with the heart. It is so called because of a burning sensation of the breastbone where the heart is located although some heart problems do have a similar sensation to heartburn. Compounding the confusion is the fact that hydrochloric acid from the stomach comes back up to the esophagus because of a problem with the cardiac sphincter, a valve which misleadingly contains the word cardiac (an adjective referring to the heart) in its name.

A changed lifestyle can be a natural cure for the pains and discomforts that go along with acid reflux. Avoiding foods that irritate the symptoms is the perfect beginning towards an acid reflux cure.
The very next step can be other lifestyle changes like giving up smoking and beer and alcohol, avoiding coffee and eating too much. For an overweight person, losing fat and shedding pounds is a first duty for a reflux cure. In prostrate (lying down) position during one’s sleeping, GERD may deteriorate.
One can employ a pillow or go to sleep with the higher body raised by at least 6 inches for helping with the symptoms of the disease. Other lifestyle changes for a natural angina cure may include homeopathic as well as natural help like herbal teas. Fresh fruits like grapes and pineapples also provide relief. Apple cider vinegar is also made claims to be an acid reflux home remedy but such alternative drugs are not commended without medical advice.

Natural Remedies for heart burn

Dissolve some baking soda in water and drink it. This method works because baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, a substance that can neutralize the gastric acid that causes heartburn. However, this method will not work for people who have chronic conditions of heartburn.

Aloe vera is a commonly used remedy. Chew some leaves of the aloe vera herb if you have complaints of heartburn. However, refrain from using commercially available aloe vera gels that might have laxative substances added to it which may compound the problem.

Both marshmallow and slippery elm have been used since long for the treatment of heartburn. These herbs can tone down and smoothen the inner lining of the esophageal tract and hence reduce the condition of the heartburn.

Medicines, like usual antacids and H2 blockers that cure heartburn disease are found often as over the counter drugs. A person may be inclined to medicines only after an acid reflux home remedy by everyday changes have not produced the desired result with the symptoms still persisting.

Diarrhea is characterised by the too regular passing of stools that are loose and without consistency. Although diarrhea is an unpleasant condition, it is an effective way for the body to rid itself of undesirable substances. This is why diarrhea usually follows conditions like food poisoning; the body is trying to rid itself of the substances that are unsuitable for the digestive system. Diarrhea is also associated with the following symptoms: vomiting, stomach cramps, thirst, fever, nausea and dehydration. Diarrhea is especially problematic in babies and persons over 65–if dehydration and loss of electrolytes occur, diarrhea can be fatal.

Apart from food poisoning, and bacteria in food and water, diarrhea is commonly caused by viruses, excessive alcohol consumption, laxatives, and caffeine. Also, some medications, like penicillin, can trigger diarrhea as a side effect; finding blood or mucus in the stool is a sign of infection or parasites.

Because the body uses Diarrhea as a natural way to rid harmful toxins from the body, it may be harmful to stop diarrhea too soon. However, sometimes diarrhea does not work to flush the body of the toxin, and so will go on for days, which causes complications such as dehydration and loss of important nutrients.

Natural Remedies for Diarrhea

There are drugs available for the treatment of diarrhea, but they tend to interfere with the natural process of cleansing the body requires. In using natural remedies, we help the body to feel better without interfering with the immune systems functions.

Blueberry root has been a folk remedy for diarrhea for many generations. Blueberries are rich in anthocyanosides, which contain antioxidant and antibacterial properties, as well as tannins which combat diarrhea. Eat blueberries raw, or use the root to make a warm tea.

Camomile tea is great for treating inflammations of the intestines. It has antispasmodic properties as well; brew a cup of camomile tea from packaged tea bags, or from the camomile flower. Steep 1 teaspoon of camomile and 1 teaspoon of peppermint leaves in a cup of boiling water for 15 minutes. Drink 3 cups daily, or until diarrhea is not persistent. Notably, the tannins in ordinary black tea also have anti-diarrhoea effects.

Cooked cereals or starchy foods, such as pre-cooked rice or tapioca cereals help ease the symptoms associated with diarrhea, especially stomach cramps. Follow cereal’s package instructions to prepare, making it as thick as you can stomach it. Avoid adding too much sugar or salt as these will irritate, rather than soothe, diarrhea. Of the common cereals, oatmeal is the least suitable for this purpose due to its high fibre content. Your intestines will not be able to tolerate the added bulk during a bout with diarrhea.

Orange peel is a remedy believed to aid in digestion. Chop orange peel and place into a pot; cover with 1 pint boiling water and let it stand until the water is cooled. Sweeten it with a bit of sugar or honey and drink.

Halitosis or bad breath, is related to a variety of causes. Some naturally occurring bacteria in the mouth can produce gaseous compounds that result in bad breath. For others, halitosis is caused by a dry mouth, which may be as a result of medications or existing medical conditions. Bad breath is quite often also found in people with gum diseases, abscesses and mouth sores. These diseases are more often than not caused by deplorable oral hygiene, dentures, smoking, or teeth restorations. The simpler causes of halitosis, like poor oral hygiene, may be treated by regular teeth brushing and flossing and visits to the dentist. Additional prevention of bad breath can be achieved by rinsing with a mouthwash after brushing and flossing teeth. However, for the more complex factors contributing to halitosis, a holistic approach can be taken to reduce its presence.

Natural Home Remedies for Treating Bad Breath

Drink Tea; preliminary studies suggest that both green and black tea contains compounds called polyphenols. These may stop the growth of bacteria responsible for bad breath.

Mouthwash; try to use mouthwash containing zinc ions. Zinc is thought to directly neutralise malodorous sulphur compounds and improve breath. This type of mouthwash should be available in several health food stores. An alternative is using mouthwash with essential oils contained in them. Studies suggest that essential oils may help to reduce bad breath. It is preferable to use a commercially prepared product, possibly available in your nearest health food store, rather than buying essential oils and mixing them with mouthwash to create your own concoction. If in doubt, always consult your dentist for advice. Avoid mouthwash that contain high levels of alcohol. Alcohol creates dry mouth, and this contributes to halitosis.

Drinking fluids; fluids help to keep the mouth cavity moist, thus eliminating dry mouth, a common cause of bad breath. Drink plenty of water and other fluids to promote this. Also, note that halitosis is often the result of excess heat in the stomach–water, soup and watery fruits and vegetables such as cucumber may help to rebalance the body.

Herbs; chew on a small sprig of fresh rosemary, parsley, spearmint or tarragon for a minute to reduce bad breath.

Minimise stress; sometimes halitosis occurs and no substantial cause can be identified. One small preliminary study found that, in healthy young men with good oral hygiene and general health, stress increased the production of volatile sulphur compounds in the mouth. Therefore, participating in stress free and relaxing activities to combat the stresses of life may be a valuable consideration.

Tongue scraper; when used, this will help to remove dead cells, food particles and bacteria from the tongue. This special plastic instrument should easily be found in drug stores and some health food stores, and are relatively inexpensive. Tongue scraping is recommended as a daily regimen, just like teeth brushing and flossing, however, if you cannot obtain a tongue scraper, use a toothbrush to clean your tongue.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is characterized as a functional disorder which affects the human digestive system. To be diagnosed with IBS, you must have experienced any from a group of specific symptoms over 12 weeks or more of the most recent year. The symptoms always include discomfort and abdominal pain and any of the following:

Pain or discomfort that is only eased by defecation

Fluctuating in the frequency of bowel movements

Change in the appearance of stools

Natural Remedies for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Peppermint Oil will ease the abdominal pain and bloating associated with irritable bowel syndrome. It achieves this through restricting movement of calcium into muscle cells in the intestines, and easing excessive muscle contractions there. Peppermint, a carminative herb, will also work at eliminating excess gas from the intestines. Available in many forms, peppermint should only be used in enteric-coated capsules when treating irritable bowel syndrome. If it is used otherwise, the oil may relax the lower oesophageal sphincter and cause heartburn. Do not consume excessive doses of peppermint oil; side effects of excessive use include nausea, loss of appetite, heart complications, nervous system disorders, and possible death. Peppermint oil should not be taken internally by children or by pregnant or nursing women.

Probiotics are naturally occurring microbial organisms that live in the digestive tract. Probiotics promote heath by suppressing the growth of potentially harmful bacteria, improving the functions of the immune system, enhancing the protective barrier of the digestive tract and helping to produce vitamin K. People with irritable bowel syndrome may be experiencing an imbalance with their normal intestinal bacteria, like probiotics, and an overgrowth of gas-producing bacteria. Though there are many probiotic strains, some are more suitable for the effective treatment of irritable bowel syndrome. Bifidobacterium infantis promotes greater reduction in abdominal pain, bloating, and difficulty in bowel movement than other strains of probiotics. If you are interested in this natural remedy, do research to identify more detailed facts on using and obtaining this treatment.

Changes in diet can help to ease irritable bowel syndrome. For many irritable bowel syndrome cases, it is intolerance for particular foods that play a major role in irritable bowel syndrome. The intolerance triggers immune responses in the gut, which lead to low grade inflammation and an imbalance of intestinal bacteria. Intolerance to dairy products and grains are commonly associated with irritable bowel syndrome; to be sure of what your food intolerance may be, work with a trained practitioner who will supervise an elimination and challenge diet. Here, many foods are removed from the diet for a short time, then reintroduced sequentially to isolate the body’s reaction to the offending foods.

Constipation

Diet and lifestyle; To combat upset stomach caused by constipation, effect changes to your diet and lifestyle. Include fibre rich foods to your daily food intake to make the stool soft and bulky and easy to pass. Foods that are a great source of fibre include: brussels sprouts, fruits, cabbage and carrot. In addition to these foods, try to limit foods with little or no fibres in them. This would include: ice cream, cheese and processed foods. Drink plenty of water as well as fruit and vegetable juices, as this too is beneficial in treating upset stomach during constipation.

Laxatives are used for treating severe constipation, while the above remedy mention targets mild constipation. Upset stomach in children with constipation is usually treated with short term dosage of laxatives, prescribed by a doctor. There are several types of laxatives, all of which must be consumed under professional medical advise and supervision, they include: bulk forming laxatives, stool softeners, lubricants, stimulants and osmotics.

Gas

Diet; instead of avoiding the foods that are responsible for the production of flatulence, it is more rational, and certainly advisable, to simply reduce their intake. This is because, those foods that usually cause excessive gas in the intestines, are foods that are rich in valuable nutrients like: fruits, vegetables, whole grains and milk products. Avoiding these food altogether will compromise your nutrition intake. Do note that foods high in fat should be avoided.

Herbal tea, and especially ginger tea is helpful in relieving upset stomach caused by gas. Alternatively, take a pinch of baking soda in a glass of water, or chew a bit of garlic.

Nausea and heartburn

The following remedies are great for combating the symptoms associated with both nausea and heartburn: camomile tea, peppermint tea, ginger, apple cider vinegar, almonds, mustard, yogurt and lemon juice.

Diarrhea

These remedies are usually ideal for treating upset stomach related to diarrhea: blackberry and blueberry tea, ginger tea, drinking a high volume water, avoiding caffeine and alcohol, eating cooked brown rice.

Though the above remedies are typically great remedies for treating upset stomachs, do ensure to consult a trained medical doctor for supervision; also, consulting a doctor first will help you to properly identify what is causing your upset stomach, thus allowing your to better treat it naturally.

Everyone experiences flatulence at some point, releasing a mixture of gases called flatus present in the intestine. The symbiotic bacteria and yeast found in the gastrointestinal tract is what reacts to produce gas; because these gases are usually released under pressure, the passing of flatus is usually accompanied by a sound and often a foul odour. This occurrence can cause embarrassment for people who are experiencing it regularly and uncontrollably in public. Some experience undesirable symptoms with the releasing of gas, including: a feeling of bloating and discomfort, excessive expulsion of wind, belching and abdominal pain.

Remedies and Methods for Treating Gas

Gas or flatulence can be effectively treated using natural, home remedies. The following are a few of the tested methods and remedies for treating gas or flatulence:

Mix ½ teaspoon of dry ginger powder with a pinch of asafoetida and a pinch of rock salt in a cup of warm water. To relieve yourself of the gas, drink the mixture.

Before going to bed at night, mix 2 teaspoons of brandy with a cup of warm water, and drink it.

Obtain fresh ginger slices and soak them in lime juice. Chew on the slices after meals.

Immediately after consuming a meal, take a drop of dill oil in a teaspoon of honey; this should be a significant help.

Dry grind 1 teaspoon each of: pepper, dry ginger and green cardamom seeds. Add ½ teaspoon of this mixture to water and drink an hour after consuming a meal.

The oldest remedy in the book is to suck on a peppermint after meals. Peppermint contains menthol which soothes the digestive muscles, and thus helps in treating flatulence, bloating and abdominal pain that accompanies gas. For years now, peppermint oil combined with caraway oil has been used to treat abdominal discomfort caused by flatulence.

Adjusting Diet to Remedy Gas

Diet is a major factor that plays into flatulence. There are certain foods that inherently produce gas when consumed. If gas is a problem for you, it will help significantly to avoid those foods and remove them from your usual diet. Foods to avoid include:

Beans

Cabbage

Brussels sprouts

Cauliflower

Broccoli

Yeast containing foods such as breads and cheese

Carbonated drinks

Oats

Potatoes

Clearly, the foods listed are healthy foods that we all need to maintain a balanced diet. So if flatulence is not a major concern, lessening your consumption of these food, instead of removing them from your diet completely is rational measure.

Eating smaller meals is also an effective measure in reducing flatulence. Chew food slowly, and eat at a slow, regular pace. Wolfing down food will cause air to get trapped inside the gastrointestinal tract and promote the release of gas. Exercise regularly, or simply engage in more physical activity to keep the intestinal muscles in ship shape. Drink water and ensure a steady intake of fibre to promote regular bowel movements; this keeps the levels of gas producing bacteria low, thus resulting in less flatulence.

What is constipation

Nothing’s moving, even though you know you have to move your bowels. Everything in your body is sending you that signal. You feel bloated and uncomfortable pressure, but when you try to go, nothing happens. Or if you do finally go, it hurts.
Constipation occurs for many different reasons. Stress, lack of exercise, certain medications, artificial sweeteners, and a diet that’s lacking fiber or fluids can each be the culprit. Certain medical conditions such as an underactive thyroid, irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes, and cancer also can cause constipation. Even age is a factor. The older we get, the more prone we are to the problem.

Here are some natural home remedies

Apples- Apples contain pectin which will add bulk to your stools and their cleansing action will encourage bowel movements.

Apple cider vinegar- As a fermented version of apples they have some of the same beneficial properties. Take two teaspoons twice a day with a glass of water.

Bananas -Bananas are high in fiber and can help restore normal bowel function.

Bran- Put at least 1/3 cup of bran on your cereal each morning.

Flaxseed oil -Flaxseed oil is a traditional folk remedy.

Beets- Take two small beets, scrub them clean, and eat them in the morning.

Brewer’s Yeast/Wheat Germ- Take half a teaspoonful each of brewer’s yeast and wheat germ with all meals.

Carrot juice- The essential oils in carrot juice have an effect on the mucous membranes in the stomach and help get the bowels functioning properly. This is good for children, too.

Dates- Soak six dates in a glass of hot water; when cool, drink the water and eat the dates.

Elderflower- Drink an infusion of elderflower once daily, as needed.

Epsom or Rochelle salts- Drink a mixture of one teaspoonful in a half glass of water before bed. This is very bitter, but very efficient.

Fruit- Eat at least three raw fruits daily. The citrus helps promote regularity. Strawberries, prunes and spinach are laxatives.

Garlic -Garlic is effective for three reasons: it soothes, cleanses and reduces inflammation.

Honey -Honey has mild laxative properties.

Licorice -Licorice is a laxative.

Molasses -Add 1 to 2 tablespoons a day to hot cereal or mix with warm water and drink it.

Olive oil -Take one tablespoonful of olive oil in the morning and one tablespoonful an hour after dinner.

Pepper -Make a massage oil of black pepper, marjoram and rosemary (one drop of each in a light carrier oil) and rub into the abdominal area.

Psyllium -Mix one or two rounded teaspoons of psyllium seed husks in a glass of water and take after meals. This is a safe laxative.

Rhubarb -helps with regularity because it is a good source of water and fiber.

Sauerkraut -Drink an 8 ounce glass of warm sauerkraut juice followed immediately by an 8 ounce glass of grapefruit juice (unsweetened).

Senna -Drink an infusion of senna once daily, as needed. Not recommended for use by pregnant women. Senna contains anthraquinone which may increase the risk of uterine contractions.

Spinach -Drinking a pint of spinach juice daily has often corrected constipation in a short period of time.

Sunflower seeds -Sunflower seeds promote regularity.

Triphala, or “three fruits” -in Ayurvedic, has been used for centuries as a mild laxative, digestive tract toner and bowel cleanser.
